ASQ instruments

ASQ is responsible for the operation and development of selected SINQ instruments, primarily dedicated to materials research: NEUTRA, ICON and POLDI.
  • NEUTRA

The instrument NEUTRA (Neutron Transmission Radiography) was the startup facility for neutron imaging at the SINQ and is nowadays still one of the top instruments in the field for neutron imaging in the world. It provides a large and homogenous thermal neutron beam for many scientific and industrial applications. A complementary X-ray tube installation is used for comparison studies (XTRA option).

  • ICON

A beam of cold neutrons is used in ICON in a similar way than in NEUTRA for all imaging purposes. However, some advanced methods and options are provided now in addition to the standard setup: micro-tomography, energy-selective imaging (using a turbine selector) and phase contrast imaging. The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art imaging systems and a user-friendly infrastructure.

  • POLDI

POLDI (Pulse-OverLap DIffractometer) is a unique time-of-flight neutron diffractometer and is hosted by the group Materials Science and Simulation.
The main applications of POLDI are the determination of residual stresses and the study of deformation mechanisms in engineering materials.
